Lake Myrtle, FL – Freshman John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) went 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs driven in to lead a strong offensive showing from the Clarkson University Baseball team, as the Golden Knights pounded out 17 hits in a 16-4 victory, in eight innings, over Sewanee the University of the South on Sunday morning.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-1 with the victory, while Sewanee dropped to 5-10 on the season. Clarkson gets an off day on Monday, but returns to play a doubleheader against Worcester State on Tuesday.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when David Kinney (Mexico, NY) hit his first home run of the season, battering a two-out offering over the left-centerfield fence. The Knights tacked on another run in the second on a bases loaded infield single from Pete Clarke (Tully, NY), which plated Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY).

Kinney opened the third with a double, and David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) followed with a double of his own to make the score 3-0. A sacrifice fly from Lenney pushed Wixted home, and then the Knights picked up another run on a John Coleman homered off the right field foul pole. A pair of walks allowed Pete Clarke to drive in another run on a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Knights a 6-0 edge.

The fourth inning saw Clarkson pick up three more runs to take a 9-0 advantage. John Coleman drove in two more runs with a single, and Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) pushed Coleman home with a single of his own.

Sewanee picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Knights gained two more tallies in the sixth. Kinney opened the frame with another double, and Wixted singled. Lenney then doubled for score Kinney, and John Coleman provided a sacrifice fly for the second run of the frame. Sewanee picked up three in the bottom half of the sixth, but again Clarkson scored in the top half of the seventh as Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) made his first collegiate at bat a success, plating a pair on a single to right-center.

Clarkson kept scoring in the eight as Kolby Ziemendorf (Webster, NY) doubled in a pair to make the score 15-4. A bases loaded sacrifice fly from Kyle Henchey (Rensselaer, NY) scored Ziemendorf three batters later, but a pair of groundballs limited the Knights to three runs in the inning.

Junior Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) earned the win in his first collegiate start, going five innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out two. Sophomore Justin Rebhun (East Greenbush, NY) pitched the final three innings for the Knights, giving up three runs and three hits in that span.

John Coleman went 3-for-3 with a homer, and Kinney went 3-for-5 with a bomb and four runs scored. Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY), Wixted and Lenney each added two hits.
