Senior Charlton Kelly, who entered today's game tied for 17th nationally with four game-winning goals, netted his seventh goal of the season and fifth game winner to lead the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Skidmore in conference play on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, New York.
With today's win, the Saints remain first in the Liberty League standings at 10-2-2 on the season and 6-1-1 in conference play, while Skidmore fell to 7-5-3 and 3-4-1.
In the 38th minute of play, Brendan McNamee sent a low cross out in front, finding Kelly, who sent the shot past Thoroughbreds' goalkeeper Sebastian Bosch.
Kelly and Tapshak Augustine each recorded two shots on goal for the Scarlet and Brown.
"Another good performance for the guys on the road today," said head coach Mike Toshack. "We controlled large portions of the game, however, Skidmore is a well-coached team and they had some dangerous chances that we had to deal with. We're particularly happy about the defensive performance from everyone from forwards down to the goalkeeper, and offensively we're a little disappointed we didn't capitalize on a few more chances, but we look forward to hosting Hobart next Saturday."
Kyle Barrett, Alex Ricci and Stanley Langyintuo each recorded one shot on goal for the Thoroughbreds.
Both Bosch and Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith finished with three saves.
The Saints finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and edged the Thoroughbreds in shots on goal, 4-3.
St. Lawrence will host Hobart on senior day, Saturday, October 27 for its final regular season home game.
