POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior forward Justin Kellett (Chazy Lake, N.Y./ North Country C.C.) scored another critical goal for the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (8-5-2, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) as they downed SUNY Geneseo (8-6-2, 4-4) 1-0 on a cold, rainy afternoon. Bears Freshman goalie Jake Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) made four saves for his fourth career win and second shutout.

Mitchell made three of his four saves in the first half as the Geneseo outshot Potsdam 5-4. The Bears defense felt the pressure, but didn't break. With less than two minutes to go in the period, Blue Knights freshman defender Caleb Murthy (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) headed a shot off Potsdam's crossbar, but the contest entered the break a scoreless tie.

The Bears picked up their intensity in the second half, outplaying Geneseo with the postseason on the line. Potsdam outshot the Blue Knights 10-5 in the final 45 minutes, firing five shots on Geneseo freshman goalie Dillon Medd (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Foxlane). He stopped four. At the 55:11 mark, sophomore defender Connor DeSantis (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) fed a cross from six yards out to Kellett at the left side of the net. He buried it for his third game-winning goal in the last six contests. The Bears continued to press and nearly 13 minutes later freshman defender Rob Dulanto (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis) rang the post with a shot. Mitchell shut down Blue Knight senior forward Ethan Gunty (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) in the 79th minute. Gunty gave Geneseo one final chance with 2:28 left, but it sailed high over the net. Kellett nearly struck again with three seconds remaining, but Medd charged out to make the save.

Medd stopped five shots on the day. Potsdam finished with a 14-10 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners.

The Bears have now beaten the Blue Knights in three of the last five meetings.

Potsdam needs a victory over Brockport tomorrow afternoon and a loss or a tie by both Plattsburgh and New Paltz to claim the last SUNYAC playoff spot. The Bears square off with the Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
