Scott Kasson won both weight events and a number of rookies had impressive performances as St. Lawrence University's men's track and field team opened its indoor season with a win in the Saint Holiday Relays at the Newell Field House on Saturday.
The Saints finished with 266 points with Ottawa second with 114 and Carleton third with 17. Athletes from Algonquin College and the Ottawa Lions Track Club also competed in the meet.
Kasson threw the shot 14.26 meters for a win in that event and the weight 14.88 meters for his second win of the day. Connor Pease was third in the shot and finished second in the weight throw.
Junior Nick Crawford won the 400 meters in 51.39 with rookie Harrison Stivers second as the Saints took the top five spots in that event. Crawford also anchored the winning 4x200 relay joining freshmen James White and Travis Hamre and senior Chris Payton with a time of 1:34.06. Stivers added a second in the 200 meters in 23.56 with White third and Travis Hamre fourth.
Payton won the long jump with a 6.32 meter mark with White finishing second while Taylor Bouchard won the triple jump at 11.69 meters with Mark Jannini second and Sven Gustafson third. Joshua Martell and Shawn Lillie tied for second in the pole vault at 3.20 metrs and Lillie added a fourth in the long jump and was second in the 60 meters dahs, running 7.35.
Jannini was second in 9.29 with Payton third and Martell fourth in the 60 hurdles while Trevor Bibb was second and Ben Fishbein fourth in the mile run. Jack Martin was third and scored first in the 800 running 2:05.84. Martin also had a spectacular leg in the 4x400 relay, recovering from a fall just after taking the lead to nearly come all the way back to win the race on the final leg. He was joined by
Bouchard, Janini and Stivers in an all-freshman relay which was second in 3:40.54 with the Ottawa Lions winning in 3:40.08.
The Saint DMR of Ellis Toll, Tyler Baldino, Fletcher Starnes and Evan Page was second in 11:44.70.
The Saints are now idle for exams and the holidays and will return to action with the St. Lawrence Invitational on Jan. 17.
