Senior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) set the record and classmate Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) continued his scoring streak with the game-winner as the Clarkson University Hockey team defeated Rensselaer 3-2 in ECAC Hockey action before a crowd of 4,346 fans at Houston Field House in Troy, NY on Saturday night.

The Golden Knights, who swept the regular-season series from the Engineers, improve their record 12-11-5 overall and move to fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-5-3 league mark. Clarkson also skated past Rensselaer 4-1 in Potsdam on November 4.

Rensselaer, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, outshot the Knights 31-17, but Karpowich was up to the task with a 29-save effort. The 2008 St. Louis Blues draft choice, who has started 26 games this season, set the new all-time Clarkson save record with 3,396 through 119 career games. Karpowich broke the old record (3,375) held by Dan Murphy ‘’98 early in the second period with a stop at 3:03.

With the game tied 2-2 midway through the third period, Tremblay took a pass off the right boards from senior Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT) and skated into the slot where he fired off a shot into the back of the net for his team-high 13th goal of the season at 13:05. Sophomore defenseman Chase Fuchs (Severna Park, MD) also assisted.

With the goal, Tremblay extended his point-scoring streak to five games with three goals and six assists over that span. Oakley, who set up two goals in the win, has a team-high 15 assists and 26 points.

Looking to take some of the sting away from Friday night’s loss at Union, Clarkson jumped out to a quick start against Rensselaer, taking a 2-0 lead midway through the first period.

The Knights struck early when sophomore defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood, NY) scored his first goal of the season at 2:38. Boak sent in a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and into the back of the RPI net after senior linemates Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) and Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) worked the puck free along the boards back to the point to earn assists.

Skating on a five-minute major power play, the Knights went on top 2-0 as Morley scored from the left circle at 11:03 for his fifth goal of the season. Oakley and sophomore Ben Sexton (Kanata, ONT) set up the power-play tally.

Less than three minutes later, Rensselaer (7-18-1, 4-9-1) came back with its first goal. Engineer defenseman Guy Leboeuf scored on a shot from the top of the left circle at 13:28 after a faceoff win by Jacob Laliberte to make it 2-1 through 20 minutes.

Working on one of its three man-advantage opportunities in the second period, Rensselaer tied the game, 2-2, when Matt Tinordi’s shot from the left circle just got inside the far post at 9:30 of the middle frame.

Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the power play, and killed off five of Rensselaer's six man-advantage opportunities, includinga power play with 19.7 second left in regulation and will RPI's goaltender pulled for aa 6-on-4 Engineer advantage.

The Knights, who are 3-1-1 over their past five games, play at Brown and Yale next weekend.
