The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team won its third straight one-goal game on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 this season, holding off Geneseo State by the score of 9-8 in Virginia Beach, VA. Junior Mac Johnson led the Saints' attack with three goals as the Scarlet and Brown defeated the Blue Knights for the first time in over a decade.
St. Lawrence trailed 4-3 after the first quarter, but rallied to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. The Saints outscored Geneseo State 4-1 in the third to open up a four-goal advantage at 9-5, but had to withstand a Blue Knight rally in the fourth that came up one goal shy at 9-8.
"I'm happy that the guys found a way to win against an always-tough Geneseo State team," said St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney. "We had a nice, balanced attack offensively, both our goalies played well and we were solid defensively all game."
Junior goalies Jeff Goeke and Jack Nuland split time for the third consecutive game, playing the first and second halves, respectively. Six St. Lawrence players each scored one goal in the contest, including Cody Danforth, Pierson Fowler, Dave Schoettler, Drake Paul, Davey Hovey and Kyle Jacobsen.
The Saints will be in action again on Friday, March 16 when they take on New England College at 6:00pm.
