Jasek Tosses Shutout As Knights Split Doubleheader Against Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Baseball team won a lopsided seven-inning contest and saw its opponents rally late to take the second game as the Golden Knights beat Skidmore College 6-0 in Saturday’s doubleheader opener before falling 5-3 in the nightcap against the Thoroughbreds.

Clarkson’s record moved to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League and the Thoroughbreds also saw their record pushed to 5-7 and 2-2. Clarkson will take on Vassar College on Wednesday in another Liberty League doubleheader, games that were rescheduled from last weekend’s weather postponement.

In the first game, Skidmore and Clarkson traded zeroes for the first four frames. The Thoroughbreds put together a rally with runners on first and third in the top of the first inning, but a fielder’s choice ended the threat, and in the bottom of the second Clarkson had runners on first and second with a hit by pitch and walk, but Skidmore’s Jordan Keysor wiggled out of the jam.

Keysor would mow through the Knights lineup one more time, allowing just one walk through the first four innings before Clarkson catcher Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY) ended the no-hit bid with a double in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Clarkson got on the score board when Justin Rebhun singled home Beninati from third. A David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) plated Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) to give Clarkson a pair of runs in the inning.

The Knights would chase Keysor and tack on four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to put an end to the Skidmore hope of another comeback. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) singled to lead off the inning and back-to-back errors allowed him to score, and with the bases loaded Driscoll singled and Morrissey walked as each gained a run batted in. Wixted then forced in Beninati on a fielder’s choice for the fourth run of the inning.

Freshman Greg Jasek (Chittenango) allowed three hits in the first two innings, but allowed soft contact the rest of the way, giving up just one hit over the final five innings to go along with one walk and three strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

In game two, the Thoroughbreds jumped out in front in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs. With one out, Jeb Clarke singled and Jeremy Selecky followed with a double, setting up a two-run single from Leejay Pollacchi to make the score 2-0. Clarkson responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. A Connor Martin (Baldwinsville, NY) groundout send home Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT), who had reached base via a walk, and Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) followed with a single to drive in Bobby Derico (Watervliet, NY), who got on base thanks to a two-out error.

The top of the third saw Skidmore regain the advantage with an RBI-groundout, but Clarkson was able to knot the score up at 3-3 when Wixted drew a two-out walk and was sent scampering home all the way from first on a double by John Coleman (Potsdam, NY).

The score remained tied until the top of the ninth inning when Skidmore strung together three straight hits to gain a 5-3 lead. Pollacchi led off the inning with a single and then stole second and Geoff Green and Erik Watkins followed with back-to-back doubles to account for the two runs. In the bottom half of the inning, Clarkson had runners on second and third with one out, but an infield groundball and fly out ended the threat for Skidmore.

Junior Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) went six innings, allowing six hits and four walks while whiffing seven. For the Thoroughbreds, Andrew Bannon pitched seven innings, giving up just four hits but allowing six free passes while striking out three.
