After being held scoreless in the first half, Meghan Hynes scored a season high 22 points in the second half to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 73-63 win over host SUNY Potsdam in a non-league game at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Hynes was 6-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line. She also grabbed five offensive rebounds for the Saints (1-5), who outscored the Bears 20-10 in the third quarter en route to their first win of the season.
Four players reached double-digit point totals for the Saints, with Caroline Dalton scoring 15 points, and Jenny Scudder and Kaelyn Kohlasch both scoring 11.
Shayna Dayner added nine points and a team high eight rebounds, which helped propel St. Lawrence to a 50-31 advantage on the boards.
Potsdam used two 3-point shots by Abbey Smith to keep pace with the Saints early in the game, but St. Lawrence built a 23-6 lead late in the first quarter thanks to a 16-0 run. The Bears chipped away at the Saints' lead in the second, pulling to within three points late in the half, but once again, St. Lawrence took control with a 14-4 run over the last five minutes of the third quarter.
The Bears cut the lead to seven points with just three minutes to play, but a jump shot by Kohlasch, a 3-pointer from Hynes and a pair of free throws by Dalton over the next minute and a half put the game away for the Saints.
Patti Dorgler, Drew Dufrane and Megan Driscoll scored 13 points for the Bears, while Secret Clark scored 11.
The Saints will face close the fall semester with another non-league game against a local opponent, as St. Lawrence will play cross-town rival SUNY Canton at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Roos House.
