The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team improved to 2-1 on the season thanks to a 15-14 victory on Friday over Brockport State in West Palm Beach, FL. Junior Brigid Hurley led the Saints with a career-high eight goals, while senior co-captain Paige Powell made a career-high 14 saves to help her team hold off the Golden Eagles.
The Saints held an 11-7 lead at halftime thanks to a 24-20 advantage in shots. However, Brockport had the better of the play in the second half, outshooting St. Lawrence 22-6, but were unable to take advantage of free position opportunities. The Golden Eagles finished 2-for-16 on free positions against Powell on Friday.
"This was a big win for us, and we're excited to be headed home with a 2-1 record," said St. Lawrence head coach Jodi Canfield. "We played three quality opponents in Florida which will help us as the conference season gets underway in the coming weeks."
The Saints held a 4-3 lead on a goal by rookie Soeurette Morley at 14:02, but three straight goals by the Golden Eagles gave Brockport State a 6-4 advantage. St. Lawrence would respond in style, scoring seven goals in a span of 7:12 including four by Hurley to take an 11-7 lead into halftime. Carly VanTassel, Hanne Bailey and Alanna Piroli also scored in the run before intermission.
Hurley would open the second half with two more goals to push the advantage to 13-7 before Brockport would mount its comeback. Erin Featherstone and Allyson Wolf got the Eagles within four at 13-9, while Emily Zartman kick-started a four goal run to draw her team within a goal at 14-13 with 4:31 to play.
With Brockport State making its charge, the Saints relied on Powell in net who delivered a clutch 9-save performance in the second half. Hurley's eighth of the game capped the Saints' scoring with 4:22 to play, and though Alyssa Case pulled the Eagles back to within one at 15-14 with 53 seconds left in regulation, St. Lawrence was able to run out the clock and celebrate the narrow victory.
Katie Sullivan led Brockport with three goals, while Zartman, Kaila Maguire and Dayna Piraino each added two. Hannah O'Connor suffered the loss in net for the Eagles, making five saves in the first half but none in the second.
Holly Noyes, Stephanie O'Rourke and Mackenzie Collins each scored one goal for the Scarlet and Brown, while Bailey, Kendall Harty, Noyes and VanTassel added one assist each.
St. Lawrence will return to action again on Tuesday, March 20 when it heads to Cortland State to take on the nationally-ranked No. 4 Red Dragons at 4:00pm.
