Senior goalkeeper Julia Hudson made 16 saves in her first game of the season for the St. Lawrence University field hockey team, but it wasn't enough as the Saints were unable to overcome an early goal by Lebanon Valley in the Saints' first game of the William Smith Tournament in Geneva, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.
Hudson, who missed the first four games of the season due to injury, had her seventh career double-digit save effort. The 16-save performance matched the second-highest total in her career; her career high was 19, made in a 5-4 win over St. John Fisher on Oct. 14, 2014. She also had 16-save performances in a 5-1 loss to Skidmore on Oct. 11, 2014 and a 3-1 loss to SUNY Cortland on Oct. 29, 2014.
Rachel Gorman scored the game's only goal off an assist from Hannah Simon on a penalty corner.
The Saints, who had a three-game winning streak entering the game, were outshot 25-5 and had three penalty corners, while Lebanon Valley had eight. The Saints, who fell to 3-2 on the year, will wrap up play at the William Smith Tournament against Manhattanville at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
