Hudson scores two as Saints men's hockey take exhibition win

Junior wing Woody Hudson scored two goals and a quartet of freshmen got their first taste of the speed of college hockey as St. Lawrence University skated to a 5-3 win over Carleton University of Ottawa in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena Saturday night.

While the game does not count in the Saint record and the stats do not count for the players, it was a good warmup for the Saints, who will open NCAA play with Niagara and RIT at Appleton Arena next weekend. A Family Weekend crowd of 2132 was treated to some end to end hockey by both clubs as the Saints pulled away for the win with a go-ahead goal late in the second period and two more in the third. It was the fifth Saint win in the series with Carleton and the Saints are now 6-1-1 in eight exhibition games against Canadian schools since 2008.

The Saints played four of the five freshmen in the class of 2019 with Jacob Pritchard scoring one goal and assisting on another and Michael Laidley picking up a pair of assists on Hudson goals. Michael Ederer also played up front for the Saints while freshman goalie Arthur Brey played the third period and stopped three of the four shots he faced.

SLU special teams also played a significant role in the win as the power play went two of six and was impressive in moving the puck on the majority of its opportunities and the penalty kill was perfect on Carleton's two chances, not allowing a shot.

The Saints scored the only goal of the first period despite outshooting Carleton 15-6. Mike Marnell, who later left the game with an injury, crashed the net and put away a pass from Pritchard at 11:49 on the power play with Brian Ward also assisting for the 1-0 lead.

Carleton goalie Francis Dupuis, who was impressive with a 40-save night, kept the Ravens in contention, but Hudson made it a 2-0 game 2:16 into the second when he one-handed a shot inside the far post from Laidley and Mike Graham.

The Ravens battled back as the Saints got caught by a pair of odd-man rushes. Mitch Zion, who played at Clarkson two years ago, scored at 2:57 on a two-on-one as the Saints were caught in a line change and Connor Devereaux tied it at 5:42 cleaning up a rebound after Saint starter Kyle Hayton made a nice save on a near breakaway by Derek Froats.

Pritchard put the Saints back in front with a nifty backhand between Dupuis and the right post from Ward and Christian Horn at 15:29 to make it 3-2 after two periods.

Hudson scored his second of the night on a shot to the upper corner 13:13 into the third to make it 4-2 and Nolan Gluchowski scored on a power play bomb from the point from Christian Horn and Eric Sweetman at 15:59.

Hayton made 14 stops in the first two periods while Brey finished up
