In the past four seasons, the Clarkson University Volleyball team has captured the Liberty League Rookie of the Year award three times thanks to talented, and ready to contribute, freshmen. The Class of 2016 has some significant shoes to fill but this group is as talented as any in the history of the program.

“We lost what was arguably the most decorated class in Clarkson’s history, but I’m excited that we were able to bring in a group of athletes who I think will have as big of an impact on the program as the class they replace when all is said and done,” said head coach Johan Dulfer. “Our immediate concern was to bring in offense, but also add some ball control and defensive instinct, and I think we accomplished both with this class. We may be very young next year, but the combined level of volleyball IQ in this group is so high that I am hopeful that we will compensate for our inexperience with plenty of heart and desire.”

Once again, coach Dulfer and the volleyball staff searched the country for talent with five of the six recruits coming from outside the Eastern Time zone. Below are quotes from Dulfer regarding the Class of 2016.

Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO), a 5-9 outside hitter: “Victoria is the type of outside hitter who we’ve been looking for. She is a perfect fit for our conference, and our style of play. Vic is an excellent passer and defender, and hits a heavy, flat ball that will cause problems for our opponents.”

Lauren Hutchinson (Spring, TX), a 5-9 opposite: “Lauren is a lefty who will be competing for time on the right side. She’s one of the most versatile and well-rounded players I’ve ever recruited and has the heart of a lion.”

Danielle Farabee (Katy, TX), a 5-10 middle hitter: “Danielle has the makings of an excellent middle. She’s quick and has the reflexes of a cat. “Danielle is also a ferocious competitor and will be very fun to watch.

Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA), a 5-10 outside hitter: “Aishvina will be fun to watch because she’s so versatile.” She can hit a variety of shots, is very explosive and has tremendous control of her swing. She’s a fiery competitor and won’t stop until she scores the point.”

Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA), a 5-5 setter/libero: “Kirstie might be one of the smartest, most athletic players I’ve ever recruited. “She and Erika Chin share an uncanny ability to read the ball and make amazing defensive plays that will energize our team and our crowd. Kirstie is also a very gifted setter and I expect her to challenge for playing time in either spot immediately.”

MacKenzie Pelton (Glens Falls, NY), a 5-7 defensive specialist: “MacKenzie is one of the pieces to our improved ball control. She works hard and absolutely loves the game. Those qualities are going to make her a key element to our continued improvement.”
