Junior standouts, goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) and forward Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) came through once again for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team, leading the Golden Knights to a 1-0 victory on the road over Yale in ECAC Hockey action in New Haven, CT on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson, which won at Brown 2-1 on Friday, completed the weekend road sweep to improve its record to 17-5 overall and to 9-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Green and Gold close out a four-game road trip, their longest of the season, in Central NY next weekend, playing at Colgate and Cornell.
Back in the Clarkson lineup after playing at the Meco Cup in Germany last week with Canada’s U22 Gold-Medal winning team, Rattray provided the game’s lone goal on Saturday at Ingalls Rink. With 3:14 remaining in the first period, the Knights’ leading scorer tallied an unassisted shorthanded marker for her 16th goal of the season and 96th career point.
Howe provided the stellar play behind Clarkson’s stingy defense and finished with 21 saves to record her fourth shutout of the season and 13th career whitewash. She posted eight first-period saves, five more in the middle frame and finished with eight stops over the final 20 minutes. Howe was especially sharp in the game’s final minutes when the Bulldogs (2-14-1, 1-7-1) pull their goaltender for the extra skater and then went on a power play with 42 seconds left in the period.
Clarkson outshot Yale 40-21 and killed off four Bulldog power plays. The Knights went 0-of-6 on the man-advantage. Jaimie Leonoff made 39 saves for Yale.
