Potsdam, NY – Freshman Matt Walsh came off the bench to score 19 points in 24 minutes as Hobart College defeated the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team 59-51 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, while Hobart evened up its conference mark at 2-2 and moved to 6-7 overall. Clarkson will travel to play Skidmore College on Tuesday and will get a 10-day break from league games after that contest.

In the first few minutes Clarkson found a way to stymie Hobart's offense, limiting the Statesmen to just one basket in the first five-plus minutes. However, Hobart got hot from the perimeter quickly and turned a four-point deficit into an 11-point lead with a 15-0 run that took a little over four minutes. That lead expanded to as many as 17 in the first half, as the Statemen's outside threat loosened up Clarkson's interior defense for easier looks.

Hobart shot 13-for-25 (52.0%) in the first half with five 3-pointers, while the Knights struggled, shooting just 21.9% (7-for-32) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.

Clarkson found a little groove in the early going of the second half, scoring the first six points of the period to get back within nine. A three-point play from Felix Abongo had Clarkson within single digits (33-24), but that burst was all that the Knights had to get back into the game. Mike Hayduk buried a 3-pointer with under 12 minutes to play to get Clarkson within eight, and Hobart responded with nine straight points to return its lead to 17 for the third time in the game. Around that point, Clarkson head coach Jeff Gorski went to the reserves in hopes of a spark, and he got just that as the Knights' bench players were able to cut the margin to six points late in the game. A full-court pass from Matt Walsh to Kenan Williams provided the Statemen with a layup and an eight-point lead late, enough to squash any hopes of a Clarkson comeback.

Walsh finished with 19 points for Hobart, the only player on either side to reach double figures. For Clarkson, Felix Abongo and Conrad Zampier each scored nine points, while Derek Hart had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
