Christian Horn intercepted a clearing attempt by the University of New Hampshire and snapped a rising wrist shot inside the near post 2:27 into overtime to lift St. Lawrence University to its fourth straight win over the Wildcats, 3-2 on Friday night.

The 19th ranked Saints improved to 3-0-0 on the season, but they had to weather a third period rally by the 1-1-0 Wildcats in the first meeting between the two teams since a 2-1 overtime win in Durham in January of 2011. It was the third victory in a row for the Saints at the Whittemore Center since 2008.

It could have come a little easier for the Saints, who took a 2-0 first period lead and dominated the second, but couldn't cushion the lead. The Wildcats came out firing in the third period and battled back to tie it.

"That was a huge win for us," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "Last year we lost games to Northeastern and UVM and some other non-conference games that I thought we could have won. Tonight we found a way to win it."

Saint goaltender Kyle Hayton, who had 25 saves in the win made some big ones in the third period and a game saver on a two-on-one by Dan Correale 52 seconds into the overtime. He had eight of his 25 saves in the third period as UNH outshot the Saints 10-3 in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

"That overtime save by Kyle was the biggest one he has made for us and that is saying something," said Carvel. "That energized us and then Christian Horn did what he does best…he beat the goalie from a pretty good distance with a real good shot."

The Saints broke on top 10:39 into the first period as defenseman Gavin Bayreuther took a pass from Ryan Lough, skated to the left faceoff dot and fired a rising shot which beat UNH goalie Danny Tirone between his glove and the post. Alex Hagen also assisted on the first Saint goal. It went to 2-0 just 43 seconds later when captain Brian Ward picked up a rebound of a shot by Jacob Pritchard which banged off the post and Ward put the puck past Tirone from his knees at the top of the blue at 11:22.

The Saints continued to control the action in the second period and generated a number of quality scoring chances, but could not get the puck past Tirone despite a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.

The Wildcats battled back in the third. UNH had an 8-1 shot advantage before finally getting on the board when Jamie Hill circled the net and put a shot toward net which bounced off a defender's foot and over Hayton's shoulder with a delayed penalty being indicated at 12:00. The Wildcats tied it at 17:36 of the third when Maxim Gaudreault cut in front and put the puck under the crossbar on a power play.

"I thought we played really well for two periods and then got lulled to sleep a little bit in the third," Carvel added. "Two goals are not enough against a team like UNH and we gave them some momentum. Their power play is a good one and we were concerned about it..they scored a big one to tie it up.

"I am real excited to win a road game against a Hockey East team. We were winning the battles and getting scoring chances, and we really didn't give up a lot considering the big ice."
