Honoring the legacy of Clarkson Hockey's #6

Posted

Prior to the start of the ECAC Hockey game against St. Lawrence University at Cheel Arena on December 8, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team held a brief ceremony to honor former Golden Knight captain Mike Morrison '89.

After wearing #20 through his first three years, senior captain Nic Pierog is donning the #6 this season, becoming the first Golden Knight to wear this number since Morrison in the 1988-89 season. A four-year standout and fan favorite at Walker Arena, Morrison passed away in a work-related accident on July 27, 1989.

Morrison's brother, Patrick, presented to Clarkson Hockey a $10,000 contribution to help fund the legacy that Mike was a big part of creating at Clarkson.

"The Morrison Family wanted to see the #6 back on the ice for Clarkson and reached out to us to see if there was someone on the team that embodied what Mike represented to Clarkson Hockey. When you read the tribute the family wrote commemorating Mike, we immediately thought about Nic Pierog. He plays the game hard, is diligent in his schoolwork and treats people the right way. With Nic being captain for his senior year, this is the perfect person to reintroduce #6 back into Clarkson Hockey in the memory of Mike Morrison."

"Mike was a great guy, who everyone liked and respected so much. He treated people well and knew how to listen. He had a tremendous work ethic and was just the consummate leader. Mike stood out and was a positive influence on all of us. I will always remember Mike as a true friend and tremendous teammate."

"Changing my number from 20 to 6 in honor of Mike Morrison is definitely one of the biggest honors of my hockey career. Mike was a big leader on and off the ice, and to be the first Golden Knight to wear his number since his playing days is very exciting and humbling. Every time I wear the #6 jersey with the Clarkson logo I will be playing for Mike."
