Homan nets overtime game-winner as Knights beat Vassar

Potsdam, NY – James Homan's flair for the dramatic came through once again for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as the senior defender scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Golden Knights to a 1-0 victory over Vassar College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Liberty League while the Brewers suffered their first loss in conference play this year, dropping to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson looks to pick up another key win on Saturday when its hosts Bard College, celebrating Senior Day prior to the 2:00 pm start time.

Homan has scored just four goals in his four-year career, with all coming in the last 20 games, but more importantly, the last three scores have been game-winners. He scored an overtime game-winner against Rensselaer in the regular season finale of 2017, a last minute goal in a 1-0 win against SUNY Canton in mid-September, and Friday's goal once again came in overtime.

Homan's most recent game-winner against the Brewers came early in the 96th minute. John Furcick took the corner kick and sent the ball into the middle of the box, and following a mad scramble in front, Homan finished the play off and emerged as the Clarkson hero.

Clarkson was busy taking shots on the Vassar frame throughout the game, with a few earlier chances that nearly resulted in scores. Henry Gomez and Stephen Klimek attempted shots just 35 seconds apart in the 23rd minute, Klimek and Brandon Bahr both had chances early in the 29th minute only 16 seconds apart, and Vassar's Will Marment had to make two saves only seven seconds apart in the 30th minute when both Matt Adamou and Gomez nearly converted.

Clarkson goalkeeper Riley McDonald also saved the Knights from possible defeat in the 67th minute when he made two stops in less than five seconds as both Mattie Mrlik and Quinn Tunnell of Vassar almost beat McDonald. Those two shots were the last attempts that Vassar could put on the frame for the remainder of the contest.

Clarkson ended with an 18-12 lead in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities. McDonald recorded his fifth shutout in six starts in 2018, making five saves, while Marment stopped four shots for Vassar.
