Junior Kyle Hayton made 25 saves en route to his record-setting 10th career shutout, as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team upset No. 6/7 Quinnipiac 2-0 to complete a weekend sweep of ECAC Hockey opponents at Appleton Arena.

The first goaltender to post back-to-back shutouts since current volunteer goaltender coach Alex Petizian did it on Feb. 27-28, 2009 at RPI and Union, Hayton broke Bill Sloan's 60-year program record with career shutout number 10 on Saturday night.

The Denver, Colo., native got help from goal scorers Drew Smolcynski and Michael Ederer as well as 19 blocked shots by the Saints in a total team win against the Bobcats.

With the win the Saints improve to 5-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference games, while Quinnipiac is now 5-3-1 and 1-1-0 against ECAC Hockey teams.

After a scoreless first period, during which Hayton made 13 saves, the Saints come out firing on all cylinders in the middle frame and outshot the Bobcats 16-6.

Smolcynski scored the eventual game winner at the 16:57 mark of the second, when senior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther sprung him on a breakaway with a two-line pass as the Hatfield, Pa. native split the defense. Smolcynski snapped off a shot from the hashmarks that beat netminder Chris Truehl high on the glove side for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.

At the 6:34 mark of the third period, with the team's skating four aside, Ederer gave the Saints some breathing room with his second of the year on a breakaway of his own after causing a Quinnipiac turnover in the neutral zone. Ederer carried through the left circle before cutting across the crease and lifting a backhand shot over the sprawling Truehl to push St. Lawrence to the eventual 2-0 margin.

Quinnipiac pulled Truel with 2:46 remaining after the Saints' Matt Purmal was assessed a minor penalty for interference and played the entirety of its power-play opportunity with a 6-on-4 advantage. The Bobcats recorded just one shot on that power play when Landon Smith hit the post, while nearly allowing an empty-net goal for the Saints' Ben Masella, though his shot rolled just wide of the right post.

The Saints finished with a 34-25 edge in shots on goal, with 21 of their 35 shots coming on the power play. Truehl finished with 32 saves for Quinnipiac.

St. Lawrence will travel to Union and RPI next weekend to continue their ECAC Hockey schedule.
