CHESTER, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (5-11, 3-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-8, 0-4 SUNYAC) 9-1 and 13-4 on Tuesday afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader. Junior third baseman Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and hit her second home run of the season. In game two, senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./ Moriah Central) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run.

In game one, the Hawks got out in front with a single by Taylor Leonette in the bottom of the second. The next six batters went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two walks. This ended junior pitcher Meghan Dougherty's (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) day early as she only went 1.2 innings. Sophomore pitcher Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./ Franklin Academy) replaced Dougherty and gave up a two RBI single to Kelsey Trudden. New Paltz ended the second inning with an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom third, the Hawks scored an unearned run increasing their lead to 9-0. The Bears got on the board in the top of the fourth. Freshman designated player Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) started the inning with a double to left center. A few batters later Streeter singled to right center scoring Fish. The next inning the Bears were able to get two on base, but could not get any closer as game 1 concluded with New Paltz winning 9-1.

Dougherty (0-4) walked four and gave up eight earned runs. McCauley pitched 2.1 innings, allowing only three hits, and one unearned run. New Paltz's Lauren Capello (3-7) gave up one earned run, and struck out seven.

In game two, the Bears wasted no time to score. Senior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) led off the contest with a double down the left field line. The next batter, freshman outfielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) popped up to third, but Ott scored on a throwing error, giving Potsdam a quick 1-0 start. In the top of the third Brace and Streeter hit back-to-back home runs, expanding the lead to 4-0. After Streeter's home run, New Paltz's Kiersten Carlomagno was relieved by Capello.

The Hawks took advantage of a couple of walks to start a rally before Shannon Fee hit a RBI single to second base, narrowing the lead 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth. After another walk, the Bears took out Fish and brought in McCauley. Following the pitching change, New Paltz scored six runs on three hits giving them a 7-4 lead after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks got two batters on base before the Bears brought in Dougherty to finish the game. Capello then put the game out of reach with a grand slam.

McCauley (1-4) was tagged with the loss. She went 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and five runs. For New Paltz, Capello (4-7) got her second win of the day after pitching 2.2 innings, striking out three and giving up no hits.

The Bears are back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. as they travel to Brockport.
