Hawks ground Potsdam women's hoops on Bear Pride Night

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Slow start for the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-18, 0-12 SUNYAC) leads to 83-52 defeat from SUNY New Paltz (14-5, 9-3 SUNYAC). Freshman guard Secret Clark (Bronx, N.Y./NYC Charter for A.E.C.I.) led the Bears with 16 points, while senior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) added 15. Sophomore guard Jasmine Bryant (Elmont, N.Y./St. Mary's College Prep) led the Hawks with 15 points and freshman guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) tacked on 14.

At 8:44, freshman guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) opened the contest with a shot inside the arch, but New Paltz's offense exploded with an 18-2 run over the next five minutes of the first quarter. The Bears closed out the quarter with a total of eight points from junior guard Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy), Clark and LaVoie. The Hawks carried the 24-12 lead into the second and kept their foot on the gas pedal until the break. LaVoie scored seven of her 15 points during the second quarter and New Paltz took the 44-21 score into halftime.

The third quarter was evenly played with the Hawks edging Potsdam 19-16. Five different Bears, including Driscoll, Smith, junior guard Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter), freshman guard Janay Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Clark with six of her 16 points leading the way offensively. The teams kept up the pace again in the fourth with LaVoie adding another six during the 10 minute span. Sophomore forward Emily Drake (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) added two points to close out the game, but New Paltz took the 83-52 win.

The Hawks edged the Bears 46-40 on the boards.

Abbey Smith added eight points and freshman forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) had team-high six rebounds for the Bears. Sophomore guard Sydney Pinn (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and junior guard Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. Senior guard Colleen Ames (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) added 10 points and sophomore forward Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) had game-high seven boards.

 The Bears are back at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium tomorrow to battle SUNY Oneonta at 2 p.m.
