NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (5-7, 1-5 SUNYAC) scored with three seconds left in overtime to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-9, 0-5) 8-7 on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) had a game-high four points on three goals and an assist along with four draw controls and three ground balls. Senior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) recorded two assists and senior captain Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) scored a goal to reach 150 points for her career.

For most of the contest the weather ranged from steady drizzle to downpour. The pace of the contest seemed to slow down as a result. Junior attack Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) opened the scoring at 26:06 to put the Hawks up 1-0. Seniors Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) answered with consecutive markers to give Potsdam a 2-1 lead at 23:08. Cole assisted on Pierce's goal. The teams traded goals the rest of the half. Freshman midfielder Jennifer O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) tied the game with a man-up tally at 16:31. O'Connor scored her first with a helper from sophomore midfielder Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) with 7:22 on the clock. Hawks senior attack Melissa Wagner tied the game at 3-3 nearly three minutes later. Newman netted the last marker of the half 59 seconds after that and the Bears took the 4-3 lead into the break.

Senior midfielder Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) got New Paltz even again just over five minutes into the second half, but O'Connor answered on Cole's second assist. Wagner got the Hawks even again at 16:54, but O'Connor set up senior captain Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) for Potsdam's final lead at 15:25. Wagner and Massena scored twice in a 1:08 span to give New Paltz a 7-6 advantage at 10:31. The lead lasted until the final seconds. With time running down, Newman fired a shot on Hawks sophomore goalie Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate). She made the save, but O'Connor scooped up the ensuing ground ball and buried a shot with 10 seconds left.

Both teams held the ball in the overtime period. With 13 seconds remaining, New Paltz missed wide with a free-position attempt. Gottschalk scored 10 seconds later to end the contest.

Bears sophomore goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made five saves and Dansereau stopped three shots for the win.

Potsdam hosts the College at Brockport at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Bears will honor their seven seniors prior to the contest on Senior Day.
