POTSDAM, N.Y.—Hartwick College (3-3) used a second half surge to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-4) 8-7 on Tuesday evening. Sophomore attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) led the Bears with three goals, while freshman midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) added a goal and an assist on the day.
Potsdam was the first to draw blood, scoring the first two goals of the game. Senior captain Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) netted the first goal unassisted at 27:42 and Stark struck off an assist from sophomore attackman Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) at 23:16. The Hawks finally got on the board just over nine minutes into the contest with an unassisted goal from sophomore attackman Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, N.Y./South Jefferson). Two minutes later, Stark put the Bears back up two with a free-position and man-up tally. Potsdam scored two more unanswered goals for a 5-1 lead before halftime. After getting the ball from senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams), sophomore midfielder Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) buried Potsdam's fourth goal at 16:17. Stark closed out the scoring in the half with a free position goal with 13:40 remaining. Junior goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown), closed out the remainder of the half with a pair of saves, while junior goalie Carleigh Tarala (Tully, N.Y./Tully) ended with three stops for Hartwick.
The Hawks got things going quick in the second half, scoring seven goals in a row in over the first 16 minutes. During the stretch freshman attackman Hanna Layton (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) scored three times, while both sophomore midfielder Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and senior attackman Ashley Werner (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) each added a pair of goals. Morgenroth stopped the run with a free-position goal, cutting Hartwick's lead down to two with 11:28 to play. Monrgenroth then assisted senior defender Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) five minutes later, getting the Bears within 8-7. The Hawks managed to keep the Potsdam off balance and possess the ball over much of the remainder of the contest to close out the 8-7 victory.
Longamore finished the game with nine saves, and Tarala stopped five shots for the win. Sophomore Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) started for the Hawks and had a pair of saves, during her time in net.
Junior captain Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) had a game-high seven draw controls and senior defender Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) totaled three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Bears return to action for the start of SUNYAC play when they host SUNY Fredonia on Friday at 1 p.m. at Maxcy Turf Field.
