(Canton, N.Y.)- Sophomore Alex Tibbles (Evans Mills, N.Y.) scored twice and sophomore Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.) made 14 saves leading the SUNY Canton men’s lacrosse team to a 3-1 win over Regis College Saturday afternoon in Canton.

The victory was the first for first-year head coach Pat Harrington who credited his team with a complete effort on the field.

“We put together a great 60-minute effort today and our guys fought all the way to the end,” Harrington said. “Corey Spuck came up huge for us again and was really a key factor in today’s win.”

The Roos jumped out on the Pride with an early first-period goal. After a successful clear, senior defenseman Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) went the length of the field and flipped a pass to Tibbles on the left side, who quickly fired a shot over the shoulder of Regis goalie Breandan Crane for a 1-0 lead with 12:10 left in the quarter.

The Pride evened the score with 10:29 left in the second quarter taking advantage of a slashing penalty called on the Roos. Peter Leighton scored a man-up goal from John Basbas and the score held 1-1 at the break.

With 12:48 left in the third quarter, Tibbles scored the game-winning goal off an assist from freshman Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) and then Wight fed freshman Taylor Caswell (Potsdam, N.Y.) with two seconds left in the game for the final score.

Spuck had six saves in the first half, four in the third quarter and four more in the fourth including two big stops with less than two minutes remaining with Regis threatening to tie the game.

“This win is huge for our confidence,” Harrington added. “It shows our guys that we can compete at this level and it gets them in the correct mindset moving forward.”

The Roos generated 17 shots on the day and held a 22-21 advantage in ground balls.

Crane finished with nine saves for the Pride.

The Roos are next in action on Sunday when they host Wells College at 1 p.m.
