Seniors Alex Hagen and Sean McGovern each scored one goal and assisted on another as St. Lawrence University beat Penn State 4-2 on Friday night, gaining a win and a tie in their first ever meetings with the Nittany Lions.

The Saints came out strong in Friday's rematch and grabbed a first period lead on Hagen's power play goal. They seemed solidly in control in the second period, but Alex Hagen and Woody Hudson celebrate Hagen's goal at Penn Statea string of penalties were called on the Saints to help the Lions get back into it. Penn State, now 4-2-1, tied the game with just over three minutes to go in the second period, but Hagen helped set up Drew Smolcynski's first of the year to give the Saints the lead 6:43 into the third.

Kyle Hayton made 37 saves for his fifth win of the year as the Saints had a 40-39 edge in shots on goal and held Penn State three goals below its offensive average in that category.

"It was a real solid bounce back night for us," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "Last night I thought they dominated for the first half of the game, but we adjusted our game plan tonight and I thought the guys were executing it real well."

Hagen scored the Saints first goal on a power play tip in as Smolcynski sent a hard shot toward net at 18:15 of the first period with Eric Sweetman also assisting. It was the second goal of the year for the Saint senior and the second power play goal of the weekend for the Saints.

The Saint speed created a number of breakaway opportunities in the game and Sean McGovern made it a 2-0 game when he scored unassisted at 10:21 of the second on a shorthanded breakaway, putting the puck past Penn State goalie Eamon McAdam from point blank range.

The Saints, now 5-2-1, were called for yet another penalty after McGovern's shorthander and this time the Nittany Lions scored early in the man advantage as Kenny Brooks snapped a rebound inside the far post at 10:45. Penn State tied it at 16:57 when defenseman Luke Juha followed up a great save by Hayton on David Goodwin with a rebound goal to make it 2-2 after two.

Smolcynski then scored his first of the year right after a Saint power play had expired, ripping a shot past McAdam from the top of the faceoff circle with Christian Horn and Hagen assisting at 6:43 for the eventual game winner and McGovern had another breakaway, splitting the defense before his shot was stopped, but Mike Marnell followed up the play and scored his fourth goal in the last three games at 12:34 for an insurance goal.

"Penalties were a real issue tonight…they had seven power plays, and our penalty kill was outstanding. We scored a shorthanded goal and and had a lot of chances, but it took a lot out of the guys who kill penalties and we lost some momentum. The power play goal they scored in the second gave them some life, but I give our guys credit…we regrouped in the third period and played a real solid period. Penn State is a team that if you don't play hard and don't play right it will be a long night like it was last night, but I thought we played a lot better tonight and can leave here having a very good weekend." Carvel added.

The Saints will open ECAC play with Union and RPI at Appleton Arena next weekend.
