Melissa Grosshans scored on a breakaway off a pass from Lucy Stillman in the 75th minute to give the St. Lawrence University field hockey team a 4-3 overtime win over Rensselaer on North Country Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Saints, who improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play. Rensselaer fell to 5-4, 0-2.

The game featured a wild finish, as the Saints took a 3-2 lead with 40 seconds to play on a goal by Carly Dziekan, but Rensselaer's Mikaela DiBello tied the game with her second goal of the day off a penalty corner after time had expired.

"It was a hard-fought battle by both teams," said Saints head coach Fran Grembowicz. "Both teams had points in the game where they controlled the pace of play."

The Saints controlled the first half, with Stillman and Anna Hughes scoring goals off assists from Maggie Wraight to take a 2-1 lead into the half. But the Engineers dominated the second half, outshooting St. Lawrence 22-2 and tying the game in the 52nd minute off a goal by Claire Cecilio.

Julia Hudson had an outstanding game for the Saints, making a career-high 21 saves to record her first victory of the season.

The Saints never trailed, answering each Rensselaer goal with one of their own.

"Our offensive push was stronger than it has been in our last few games," said Grembowicz. "We worked extremely hard for that win; it was a great team effort."

Rensselaer finished with a 37-15 edge in shots and a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners. Rachel Kaufman made four saves for Rensselaer.

St. Lawrence will head to Vermont to face Middlebury in a non-league game on Tuesday, then returns to Liberty League play on Saturday, facing Union at 4:30 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y.
