Sophomore defenseman Jamie Goldsmith scored with 1:58 left in the first period to give St. Lawrence University's women's hockey team the lead and a stellar defensive performance by the Saints limited Yale to just 11 shots on goal as the Saints swept and ECAC Women's Hockey series for just the second time this season with a 2-0 win at Appleton Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Saints, now 12-11-2 overall and 7-6-0, moved to within a point of fifth place Princeton and RPI in the ECAC standings with the weekend sweep which included a 4-2 win over Brown on Friday. Yale drops to 5-12-2 overall and 4-7-1 in league play and is now four points behind eighth place Clarkson in the standings. The Saints improved to 5-5-1 on home ice with the weekend set.

"It was an important weekend for us and a good sweep," said Saint coach Chris Wells. "When you hold a team to single digits in shots for 50 minutes...even thought it had eight power play chances...you are playing some very good defense. I thought we moved the puck very well and were excellent in the defensive end."

While the Saints controlled the first period, outshooting Yale 11-2 despite four Yale power plays, they were stymied by goalie Jackee Snikeris until Goldsmith walked down the slot after taking a pass from junior center Ally Bero and put the puck past Snikeris for her second goal of the season at 18:02 of the first period. Mel Desrochers also assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The Saints kept the pressure on in the second period, but could not get another past Snikeris, who made 13 of her 33 saves in the middle stanza. Yale was held to eight shots through the first two periods and did not get its tenth of the game until 7:46 remained in regulation time.

Sophomore center Kelly Sabatine gave the Saints an insurance goal 7:08 into the third period when she worked in close and slipped the puck between Snikeris and the post for her 13th of the year with Brooke Fernandez and Desrochers assisting

Goaltender Maxie Weisz needed just 11 saves for the shutout, her second of the year and fourth in her career as the Saints finished with a 35-11 edge in shots on goal.

"We have a big road series next weekend at Quinnipiac and Princeton and then we have five straight home games to start February, so hopefully we can build off this weekend and get a little bit of a roll going," Wells added.
