A two minute stretch in the second half sunk the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as the Green and Gold fell to visiting Rensselaer 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.
Clarkson sees its record fall to 4-8-2 overall and RPI improves its own record to 9-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference.
The Golden Knights led 1-0 at halftime through a goal by Maximilian Leetz. In the seventh minute, Leetz collected a pass from Jon Jones behind the RPI defense and raced in on the Engineers' goal. He clipped his shot over a diving RPI goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
RPI took the lead with two goals in two minutes early in the second half. Andrew Gondek scored off a scramble in the Clarkson box and then 22 seconds later, Devon Baughen scored to give RPI a 2-1 lead. Seven minutes later, Nathaniel Gunderson headed in from close range to give the Engineers an insurance goal.
RPI finished with a 14-5 edge in shots and a 7-3 lead in corner kicks. Riley McDonald had two stops in goal for Clarkson with Ryan Nealon making one stop for Rensselaer.
Clarkson will return to action next Saturday when it plays host to Union in a 3:00 pm game.
