Potsdam, NY - For the first time in nearly fifty years, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team held its opponent scoreless as the Golden Knights defeated visiting St. John Fisher 14-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
Clarkson is now 2-1 on the season while the Cardinals are 3-1 so far. It was the first shutout for Clarkson since defeating Alfred 10-0 in 1966, and just the fourth in program history. The Golden Knights have not allowed a goal in seven straight quarters, last allowing a score in the first period against Brockport, a run of 106-plus straight minutes.
Senior Jack Dowst (Weare, NH) opened the scoring for Clarkson at 11:52 in the first period and it was the first goal of the season for him. Sophomore Ryan St. Croix (Camillus, NY) scored his first goal of the game at 2:43 to double the Clarkson lead. Dowst and St. Croix would each score again in the second quarter with junior JR Campbell (Saratoga Springs, NY) adding one in the period to give the Green and Gold a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Clarkson would open up a comfortable margin in the third quarter as they added six goals in the period. The Golden Knights would add three more in the last fifteen minutes to close out a 14-0 win.
St. Croix led the team with three goals to give him a team-leading seven so far this season. Dowst, Campbell, and senior Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) had two goals apiece while freshman Sam Groves (Milton, NY) and senior Dylan Hrebenach (Saratoga Springs, NY) each had two assists. Clarkson played three goalies with sophomore Nick Strandholm (Happy Valley, OR) playing the first 50 minutes and making seven saves to get the win. Junior Garth Buck (Bridport, VT) and freshman Timothy St. Croix (Camillus, NY) combined to play the final ten minutes in the cage to complete the shutout. It was the first shutout for Clarkson since defeating Alfred 10-0 in 1966.
Clarkson will travel to Nazareth College for a 4:00 pm game on Tuesday afternoon.
