Coming off two solid efforts, but just one win to show for its hard work last weekend, the Clarkson University Hockey team will be looking for better results on the scoreboard this Friday and Saturday when it hosts Bentley University in the first ever meetings between the two schools. The Golden Knights face off against the Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Guided by eighth-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Chris Rogles, the Knights opened their 20th campaign at Cheel Arena last Friday with an impressive 4-0 victory over Bowling Green. On Saturday, however, the Green and Gold could not capitalize on their chances and suffered a 3-0 loss to the Falcons.

Clarkson, led by junior captain Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ONT) and assistant captains, senior Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY), stands at 2-2 overall. The Knights opened their 89th season of hockey on October 8-9 with a pair of games against nationally-ranked foes at the Omaha Stampede in Nebraska. After falling to Nebraska-Omaha 8-0 in the first game, Clarkson came back with a 6-2 victory over St. Cloud State.

Junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) backstopped Clarkson to its first shutout victory in over two years and the Golden Knights received a balanced offensive effort with four different goal scorers in Friday’s blanking of Bowling Green. Senior Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) and Morley tallied in the first period, and freshman Mike Garlasco (Mahwah, NJ), with his first collegiate goal, and DeFazio scored in the third as the Green and Gold won their second straight game.

On Saturday, despite out shooting the Falcons 31-24, Clarkson suffered its second shutout of the season.

After a non-league encounter against North Country rival St. Lawrence Univesity for Halloween Faceoff at the Herb Brooks 1980 Arena in Lake Placid on October 30, the Knights open ECAC Hockey play with five consecutive games at Cheel Arena, beginning with Colgate University on November 5.

In the midst of a five-game road trip, Bentley, of Atlantic Hockey, opened its season with a pair of losses against ECAC foes. The Falcons, guided by head coach Ryan Soderquist, came up short in a late rally at Quinnipiac last Friday, falling 3-2 to the Bobcats in Hamden, CT. On Saturday in Troy, NY, Bentley was shut out by Rensselaer, 3-0. After this weekend’s series in Potsdam, the Falcons play at Northeastern on October 30 before opening the home portion of its schedule in Waltham, MA with a weekend series against conference foe Niagara University on November 12-13. Bentley skated to a 12-19-4 overall record, including an 8th-place 10-15-3 Atlantic Hockey mark, in 2009-10.
