CANTON – Clarkson University freshman Marissa Cook (Chateaugay, NY) scored her first collegiate goal late in the first half for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, but the Golden Knights couldn't hold on for the tie against Lasell College, falling 3-1 in the North Country Classic Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights moved to 1-2-0 overall on the season and will try to break out of a small losing skid when they host Potsdam State at 4:00 pm on September 9. That game will be played at Clarkson Field.
Lasell got on the scoreboard first against the Knights with a header off a cross in the 27th minute, but Cook evened the score in the 38th minute of the game. Sophomore Katie VanDeValk provided a solid pass to Cook, who was able to get a step on the defense and hit a hard shot past a sprawling Ashley Parrelli, Lasell's goalkeeper.
The tie was shorlived for the Knights, however, as Lasell regained the advantage just four minutes later on a shot that just snuck under the crossbar. Lasell picked up another goal early in the second half and held on for the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY) reached double figures in saves for the second straight day, recording 11 stops for the Golden Knights. Lasell owned a 22-11 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kick chances.
