CANTON -- Sophomore transfer Ryan Recchia (Latham, NY) finished the 5,000-meter Kangaroos Invitational in just 16 minutes, 30 seconds, nearly half a minute faster than any other competitor, and senior Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) ran the same distance in 20:57 to lead the Clarkson University Cross Country team to a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights' men finished first among five teams with a score of just 15 points, the minimum amount allowable in the scoring system, while the women also took first with 25 points. Clarkson will next compete on Wednesday in a meet hosted by SUNY Potsdam, but the event will take place on Clarkson's Munter Trails.

Recchia averaged a 5:19 mile in the 5K event, and eight of his teammates followed him past the finish line before a runner from another school completed the race in a dominating effort. Senior Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) was second in 16:59, while classmate Phillip Spinosa (Spencerport, NY) placed third in 17:15. Sophomore Jacob Dowman (Essex, VT) took fourth in 17:18 and senior Ryan Ash (Glens Falls, NY) rounded out the scoring by coming in fifth in 17:18. John Bell (Marcellus, NY), Brad Denton (Honeoye Falls, NY), Michael Feeney (Lockport, NY) and Nick Bouton (St. George, VT) came in sixth through ninth, respectively, for Clarkson.

The women weren't quite as dominating, but still easily paced the field with just 25 points, with Castleton State coming in second with 75 points. Zarnofsky led the pack with a time of 20:57 for an average of 6:45 per mile. Junior Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) followed closely behind with a time of 21:06 and junior Fiona Recchia (Latham, NY) placed fifth in 21:44. Senior Erin Corrigan (Remsen, NY) raced to a seventh-place finish in 22:03 and sophomore Ashley Forshey (Scotia, NY) finished off the scoring for Clarkson in 10th place in 22:22. Freshman Allie Day (North Yarmouth, ME) and junior Chelsea Farinacci (Huntington, NY) were right on Forshey's heels, placing 11th and 12th, respectively.
