Potsdam, NY – Senior Tyler Cline (Tuxedo, NY) started off Wednesday's SUNY Potsdam Fall Invitational with an eagle on the par-five first hole and never looked back as he won medalist honors and helped lead the Clarkson University Golf team to a first-place finish at the annual event.
The Golden Knights finished seven strokes ahead (306) of second-place Potsdam (313). Oswego State came in third at 317 and SUNY Canton finished off the scoring with a respectable score of 320.
Cline shot a one-over par 73 (36-37), eagling the first hole and then recording birdies on the sixth and eighth holes. He was able to hold off competitors from Canton in Zach Meade and Nolan Reid, each who had solid back nines, and John Hickey of Potsdam, who trailed Cline by a single stroke at the turn but mustered a 39 on the back nine.
Following Cline's 73 were junior Jim Greg (Clifton Park, NY), who shot a 76 (37-39) and classmate Matt Blair (South Glens Falls, NY) with a 77. Junior Scott Henning (Vienna, VA) rounded out the scoring for Clarkson with an 80, shooting just one-over on the back nine. Freshman Anthony Monteleone (Warsaw, NY) was the fifth scoring golfer for Clarkson, if necessary, and he settled in with an 81.
Playing as individuals for the Knights, junior Evan Cody (Malta, NY) shot a 77 with birdies on the first and ninth holes of the front nine, while sophomore Nick Helgeland (Jasper, NY) scored an 82. Matt Miller (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Brian Billings (Webster, WI) each recorded an 83, while Nate Zakreski (Hartland, WI) finished at 85.
