BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (5-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) used overwhelming offense and stifling defense to down the SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team (3-5, 0-1) 21-2 in the team’s SUNYAC opener on Saturday afternoon. Karen Bianchi scored a game-high seven goals to lead the Golden Eagles. Senior attack Maribeth Simmons and junior attack Denise Johns each scored for the Bears.
Brockport raced out to a 20-0 advantage, including a 16-0 lead at halftime. During the run Bianchi scored all seven of her markers, Emily Zartman scored four goals, Nina Tassone struck for three of her four, Alyssa Scordo recorded three goals and two assists and Sarah Brown totaled two goals and four helpers.
Johns got Potsdam on the board at 19:29 of the second half with an assist from senior captain Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna). Tassone buried her fourth at 11:07 and Simmons closed the scoring with 3:27 on the clock.
In goal, senior captain Kaci Milligan made 11 saves and allowed 17 goals in the first 52:23. Sophomore goalie Jen Chmiel made two saves and allowed four goals in the final 7:37. Brockport’s Hannah O’Connor earned the win with a shutout and four saves over the first 38:34. Bree Galloway made four saves and allowed both Bears goals in the last 21:26.
The Bears begin a four-game home stand when they host Oneonta State at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3.
