POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (5-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) used clutch shooting late to escape Jerry Welsh Gymnasium with a 65-60 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-7, 1-2). Three Bears and three Golden Eagles each reached double-digits in scoring on Friday night.

Senior captain Chenice Russell (Moira, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) put Potsdam up 5-0 with a layup and a three-pointer just a minute into the contest, forcing Brockport to play catch up early. At the 11:52 mark, a three from senior captain Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) ignited an 18-10 Bears' run over the next seven minutes to give Potsdam its largest lead of the contest at 30-17. However, Brockport answered with a 14-0 stretch to take a 31-30 lead into the locker room. The Eagles hit three shots from beyond the arc during the run, including two from sophomore guard Lisa Yacovoni (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell).

Neither team could pull away in the second half, trading basket for basket. Junior guard Colleen McNamara (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) hit a jumper nearly seven minutes into the final period to give the Bears a 45-41 lead with 13:37 to go. However, Brockport answered with two quick threes from senior guard Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and Yacovoni to erase the advantage. Twice over the next six minutes, Brockport went up by four points, but junior captain Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) and Russell each hit jumpers to put Potsdam back out in front. Two free throws from senior captain Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) knotted the score at 60 all with 2:13 remaining. Again Brockport answered with a three-pointer. Freshman guard Faith Welch (Albany, N.Y./Catholic Central) connected from long range with 53 seconds left. The Eagles hit seven of 14 three-point attempts in the second half. Welch then hit two free throws with 36 ticks left to seal the 65-60 victory.

Kmiecinski had a team-high 13 points for the Bears, while Kouzan finished with 12 and Russell chipped in 10. Weigel narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Marshall finished with a game-high 19 points and 13 boards. Welch accounted four 16 points and Yacovoni added 12 on four-of-six shooting from three-point range.

Brockport outshot Potsdam 40.4 percent to 35.6 from the floor and held a 50-29 advantage on the glass.

Next, the Bears host Geneseo at 2 p.m. to wrap up their league weekend.
