Potsdam, NY - A pretty cross into the box found the head of Matt Koziol as Rensselaer picked up its first conference win of the season in defeating the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 1-0 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The loss dropped the Golden Knights to 4-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the Liberty League with three league contests remaining in the season. Rensselaer moved to 5-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in league games. Clarkson looks to edge back into the playoff picture tomorrow against Union College.

Following a scoreless first half in which even shots were at a premium, it appeared as if the two teams might be headed to extra time in the periodic rain. However, Rensselaer converted late in the contest to put more pressure on Clarkson's offense to get a goal late in the game. William Mignon sent a beautiful cross into the penalty area where Matt Koziol was able to redirect the pass into the net on a solid header at the 80:55 mark in the second half. The goal was Koziol's team-best fifth of the season.

Rensselaer finished with a 10-6 lead in shots, but only one of Clarkson's chances went on goal. Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) made four saves for the Golden Knights, while Rob DeWald needed to make just one save for RPI. The Engineers also had a 5-0 edge in corner kick chances.
