Rookie Alex Gilmour scored a pair of goals and Arthur Brey made 19 saves en route to his first win of the season as the No. 16 St. Lawrence men's hockey team beat Canisius 2-1 in Buffalo, N.Y. Saturday night.

Gilmour – who has been with the Saints for just over a week – tallied his first career point in Friday night's tie before helping St. Lawrence to its first win in the New Year on Saturday night at the HarborCenter. His power play goal in the second period extended the team's streak to five straight games with a man-advantage tally.

He gave the Saints a 1-0 lead at 12:15 of the first period when he tipped a shot from senior defenseman Ben Masella and beat Canisius netminder Charles Williams five hole. Gilmour won a battle on the end boards and played the puck to Carson Gicewicz on the half wall. Gicewicz fed Masella on the point for a shot into traffic with both Gilmour and Ryan Lough in front of Griffs netminder.

Brey's first real test of the game came with 50 seconds remaining in the first period when Dylan McLaughlin caused a turnover in the Saints defensive zone and put a backhand shot on net from in close, but the Yorba Linda, Calif. native shut the door.

At 8:07 of the second, Gilmour extended the Saints' lead to 2-0 with a turnaround shot from the slot that hit a Canisius defender in front before finding its way behind Williams.

Quick puck movement up top by Nolan Gluchowski and Ben Finkelstein helped free up Gilmour in the middle of the Griffs penalty kill unit for the open look. The assist for Gluchowski extended his point streak to six games.

With time winding down in the middle frame, Brey stopped Ryan Schmelzer with the right pad on a breakaway to send the Saints into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Of Brey's 19 saves, he made one on a breakaway and three from point blank range.

Canisius spoiled his shutout bid at 16:35 of the third period with a Nick Hutchison goal when he roofed a shot over a sprawling Brey after a scramble in front for the eventual 2-1 margin.

To seal the win, the Saints had to kill a 6-on-4 power play opportunity for the Griffs after Matt Purmal was assessed a penalty for tripping with 1:28 remaining and Canisius pulled Williams for the two-man advantage. The Saints limited Canisius to just two shots on in that stretch, one of which was blocked by Gluchowski, the other sailed wide.

St. Lawrence finished 1-4 on the power play, while Canisius was 0-5. Williams finished with 33 saves for the Golden Griffins.

The Saints will resume ECAC Hockey play next weekend with a road trip to Brown and Yale. Both games will be available on the Ivy League Digital Network.
