Gicewicz, Saints men's hockey rally to force OT, but fall to Harvard 4-3

Junior Carson Gicewicz's third goal in as many games with 37.1 seconds remaining in the third period helped the St. Lawrence men's hockey team force overtime on Saturday night against Harvard, but the Saints were upended by the Crimson in the extra frame, 4-3.

Jack Badini scored the game-winning goal for the visitors off a rebound from below the red line on the right post 1:16 into the overtime.

It was St. Lawrence that got on the board first with Ryan Lough's third of the season at the 5:54 mark of the first period. Lough buried the rebound off a shot by first-year defenseman Dylan Woolf, with Gicweicz also assisting on the play. The assist is the first collegiate point for Woolf.

Harvard answered; however, with two goals from Ryan Donato in a span of three minutes later in the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Both were wristers from the right circle the beat the Saints' Arthur Brey high, just under the crossbar.

After a scoreless second period, Harvard extended its lead to 3-1 with a 5-on-3 power play goal from Lewis Zerter-Gossage at 4:39 of the third. After a pair of save by Brey, both teams battled for the loose puck in front of the crease, but it was Zerter-Gossage who was able to get a shot away for a two-goal Crimson lead.

Just over a minute later, however, with Harvard still on the power play, Lough sent a pass from along the end boards that skipped off a Harvard defenseman at the blue line and right onto the tape of Mike Marnell for a shorthanded breakaway. The South Huntington, N.Y. native deked left and got Lackey to bite for an easy finish inside the right post to cut the deficit to one at 3-2.

Late in the frame, after calling a timeout and pulling Brey, the Saints had sustained zone time with the extra attacker and were able to set up for the game-tying goal.

Marnell carried the puck up the half wall and hit Gluchowski on the opposite point, who unloaded on a shot into traffic with Gicewicz, Lough and Callum Cusinato posted up in front. Lackey made the initial save, but Gicewicz tucked the rebound underneath him to tie the game and energize the Appleton crowd.

Lackey rebounded and robbed Marnell of the game-winning goal early in overtime with a glove save off a rebound from point blank range.

Baldini's winning tally came just 40 seconds later for the Crimson.

The Saints fall to 4-18-2 and 0-11-1 in ECAC Hockey contests with their fourth consecutive one goal loss, while Harvard improves to 9-6-4 and 8-3-3 against league opponents.

Harvard hit three posts on Saturday night and the Saints' Keenan Suthers, looking for his first career goal, rang the crossbar in the second period.

Harvard finished with a 34-23 edge in shots and was 1-3 with the man-advantage, while the Saints finished 0-2. Michael Lackey stopped 20 shots from the Crimson, including the two huge changes in the overtime. Arthur Brey finished with 30 saves for St. Lawrence.

The Saints will return to Appleton Arena next weekend for two more ECAC Hockey games against Brown and Yale.
