Potsdam, NY – Despite controlling the play for the first portion of the opening half, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team gave up two first half goals and ended up on the losing end of a 3-0 decision to SUNY Geneseo in the second game of the North Country Classic Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1, while Geneseo finished off the tournament with a 2-0 record. Clarkson will take on SUNY Cortland next Friday in Central New York, but returns to Potsdam to face Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights possessed the ball in the Geneseo defensive end for most of the first 15 minutes, but were able to muster just one shot and a pair of corner kicks. Geneseo turned the tide when Ellie Gregory found herself alone in front on a deflected shot from about six yards out in the 20th minute. Thirteen minutes later Geneseo tacked on another goal when Rachel Walsh lifted a pass over the top of the Clarkson defense and was able to find Audrey Reid, who was able to beat a defender and Clarkson keeper Elyse Green for a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Knights started off the second half strong with three shots in the first 10 minutes, but again couldn't muster enough offense to put together a solid scoring opportunity. Geneseo did find itself in a solid situation for scoring midway through the half and added an insurance goal when Audrey Reid found the head of Ashley Byrne off a corner kick in the 67th minute.
Elyse Green finished with three saves for Clarkson, while Emily Janiszewski made a single save for Geneseo. The visitors held a modest 8-5 edge in shots and the two teams finished with four corner kick chances each.
