POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (7-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) fell 2-0 at SUNY Geneseo (4-2-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) on Friday in its SUNYAC opener. Freshman Nicole Bell (Victor, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and freshman Hannah Sullivan (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) each scored a goal for the Knights.
Sullivan struck for the first goal of the afternoon 30:47 into the first half. The next one came shortly after when Bell scored on the assist from sophomore Ellie Gregory (Commack, N.Y./Commack) to give the Knights the 2-0 lead. Potsdam had few scoring opportunities in the first half. The Knights were also able to create a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
Potsdam started the second half strong with sophomore goalie Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford) having two saves early in the period. However, the Bears offense had a hard time creating scoring opportunities and Knights senior goalie Emily Janiszewski (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park) frustrated them. The Knights were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Geneseo outshot Potsdam 16-5 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Janiszewski had three saves for the Knights, Hobika had six for the Bears.
Potsdam looks to bounce back when they travel to Brockport tomorrow for a 1 p.m. contest.
