Geneseo, NY - Despite having just as many chances on goal as the hosts, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-0 decision against Geneseo Friday afternoon at Saratoga Field.
The Golden Knights fell to 0-2-1 on the season and will face the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon. The Knights and Yellowjackets have played to overtime four straight meetings and have combined for only one goal in that span.
Geneseo scored a pair of goals just 65 seconds apart early in the first half and would need no more. Pat Lynch sent one of the Blue Knights' seven corner kicks to the far side of the box to Alex Stephan, who then took a shot from about 15 yards out for his second goal of the season at the 16:13 mark. In the 18th minute, Stephan was called upon again following a foul called on the Golden Knights, and his direct kick from 25 yards out finished just under the crossbar for a 2-0 Blue Knights advantage.
Clarkson had more shots and corner kick chances in the first half, but the Knights four corner opportunities and five shots, including three on goal, came up empty. Sophomore Trevor Blackwell (Pittsford, NY) had a pair of headers off the corner kicks that were denied by Geneseo's Nick Voggel.
The two teams finished tied in shots 9-9 while the Blue Knights had a narrow edge in corner kicks at 7-6. Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) made one save for the Golden Knights, while Voggel made six saves for Geneseo.
