Sophomore Laura Gay shot the best round of the tournament on a difficult Clifton Springs Country Club layout on Sunday and was one of just three players to shoot below 90 in both rounds, winning medalist honors and leading the St. Lawrence University women's golf team to the team title at the William Smith Invitational.

Gay shot an opening 87 on the 6092 yard, par-72 course on Saturday and came back with an 82 on Sunday for a 169 total and a two-stroke win over Indiana Jones of Ithaca, who shot 85-86 for a 171 total, playing as an individual. It was the first career title for the Saint sophomore and her best finish as a collegian.

The Saints, who led host William Smith by 10 strokes in the team race after the first round, ended up with a 42 stroke win over Hamilton with William Smith finishing third. SLU had a team total of 350 on Sunday and a 721 total score while Hamilton finished at 38—383-763 and William Smith had a 766 total.

Sophomore Lexi Haehl (left) also had her best collegiate finish and first top ten as she was sixth with rounds of 94-90 for a 184 total. Rookie Hailey Wilson was one of five players to break 90 on Sunday as she bounced back from an opening round 103 with an 88 and finished 13th at 191. Augusta Mayer shot 95-90 for a 185 total and was seventh in the 38 player field. Rookie Natalie Squillace, playing as an individual, shot 92-97 for a 189 total and was tied for tenth while Grace King shot rounds of 95 and 98 and finished 14th.

In Saturday's opening round, the course was the big winner as only three players broke 90 in a field of 37. Indiana Jones of Ithaca, playing as an individual was the day one leader with an 85 while Kara Capstraw of William Smith shot 86 to join Gay in the sub-90 group.

The Saints return to action at the Cortland Invitational next weekend.
