Two third-period goals from Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) spearheaded a 3-1 win for the fourth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team over Princeton on Saturday night in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson is now 22-4-5 overall this season and 16-1-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Princeton drops to 15-8-3 overall and 11-6-2 in conference.

"Princeton played a good game tonight and really made us work for the win," said Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Shea did a good job making some key saves which gave us an opportunity to stay in the game long enough to figure out a way to win. Getting two points against a quality opponent like Princeton this time of year should hopefully give us some confidence heading into our game tomorrow"

The game could not have started any worse for the Golden Knights as just 11 seconds after the puck was dropped Clarkson was behind. Princeton regained possession after losing the initial faceoff, and Morgan Sly fed Cassidy Tucker who skated in on the left hand side. Tucker lifted a shot that beat Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) and just caught the underside of the crossbar.

Clarkson answered thanks to its top line. Gabel collected the puck in the center of Princeton's zone and passed to assistant captain Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) who was near the right circle. Bannon sent a pass directly across the goal to co-captain Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT) who scored at 13:17 in the first.

That line was momentarily separated as Gabel needed to be helped off the ice after a collision near the end of the first period. However, she returned to the ice for the second period and continued on. That proved crucial in the late going as neither team could break the tie throughout the second period and more than halfway through the third. The breakthrough came at 11:44 when Mercer found Bannon with a pass to start the attack. Bannon slipped a pass forward to a surging Gabel who was able to score on a one-on-one with Princeton's goaltender.

Gabel added a second goal with 18:51 left as Bannon poked the puck away in the defensive end off a faceoff to Mercer who once again fed Gabel, with Gabel finishing into the empty Princeton net.

Princeton finished with a 28-25 advantage in shots. It is just the second win of the season that Clarkson has won while getting outshot. Neither team took advantage of penalties as Clarkson went 0-4 on power-plays while Princeton failed to score on all five of its extra man opportunities. Tiley finished with 27 saves for Clarkson while Steph Neatby had 22 saves for Princeton.

Clarkson will play its final regular season home game of the season tomorrow at 3:00 pm against Quinnipiac.
