One night after suffering an agonizing overtime defeat, Clarkson University came back with its own thrilling extra-session victory on Saturday, a 3-2 triumph against Harvard at Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, MA.
The nation's top two leading scorers, senior left wing Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) and sophomore linemate, right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) combined on the winning goal with 4.9 seconds left in the five-minute overtime.
With the victory, the Golden Knights keep their hopes alive for their third consecutive ECAC Hockey regular-season title. With two games remaining in the regular season, Clarkson owns a 15-5 conference record, three points behind-league leader Princeton and one point back of second-place Cornell.
Ranked fourth in the nation, Clarkson owns a 24-7-1 overall record and will host Princeton and Quinnipiac next weekend at Cheel Arena.
With time winding down in the Knights' third straight overtime contest, Giguere, who displayed her play-making ability all game, set up the winner by Gabel. The NCAA's leading goal scorer, Gabel took a centering pass from Giguere and knocked home her second goal of the game and her 33rd of the season. Senior defenseman Emma Keenan (Calgary, ALB) started the play on Gabel's nation-leading ninth game-winning goal of the year with a pass to Giguere out of the Clarkson end.
Gabel tallied twice in the win, Giguere, the nation's leading playmaker, set up all three Clarkson goals and Keenan recorded two assists.
The Green and Gold put a season-high 51 shots on net. Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, ONT) turned aside 21 of Harvard's (10-13-3, 8-9-2) 23 shots.
The Knights went 0-of-8 on the power play, although several of Clarkson's man-advantage chances lasted only a few seconds because of penalties on the Green and Gold. The Crimson, who also had several brief power plays, went 1-of-7 with the man advantage.
Harvard opened the scoring when Kristi Della Rovere redirected a shot from the point for a power-play tally at 3:41 of the first period.
Just 22 seconds later, the Knights responded when Giguere stole the puck at center ice and broke free of the Harvard defense on a rush. Giguere skated to the top of the crease and slid a pass over to junior Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Republic), who tapped the puck into the open side of the net for her 18th goal of the season.
Another rush by Giguere in the middle frame set up Clarkson's second goal. Skating down the slot, Giguere put a shot on net, where Harvard goaltender Lindsay Reed made the initial stop. The rebound bounced around the edge of the crease where Gabel found it and slapped in her first goal of the game at 7:23 to give the Green and Gold a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.
The Crimson tied the game midway through the third period on a shot by Kaitlin Tse that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net at 12:18.
