Furious comeback falls just short for Roos men's basketball

Canton, NY – Freshman point guard Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) scored 21 of his game-high 26 points after halftime leading the Roos all the way back from an 11 point halftime deficit, but the team fell in the closing seconds, 65-63, to visiting Fisher College on Saturday at the Roos House.

After OJ Moore scored a lay-up in transition the Falcons led 47-36 with 13:14 left to play. The Roos rattled off seven straight points as Adam Felt (Lisbon, NY) found Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) inside to start the spurt. Annorh hit two from the free throw line and splashed a three off a dish from Fletcher to get SUNY Canton with 47-43 with just over 11 minutes to play. Fisher would never lead by more than six the remainder of the contest.

Kyle Murphy picked up a steal and finished off the fast break the other way to make it 60-55 Fisher with 4:16 on the clock. The hosts scored four straight as Annorh split a pair of free throws and drained a deep ball from the right wing as the crowd erupted.

SUNY Canton put together a defensive stop and after a timeout Felt came off a screen and drained a long ball dribbling to his left to give the Roos their first lead of the second half at 62-60 with 1:18 to play. Ira Haywood used a strong lefty dribble drive to finish inside over the SUNY Canton defense tying the game with 52 seconds remaining.

The Roos turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and with just a half a second differential on the shot clock and game clock the Falcons looked to get what would be the last possession. After a Fisher timeout and with time winding down Shular drove the lane and kicked to a wide open Murphy in the left corner who swished the go-ahead three with just 3.5 seconds to play.

The Falcons purposely fouled Annorh with 1.3 seconds remaining sending him to the line for two. After missing the first Annorh made the second with Fisher set to inbound from the baseline. The SUNY Canton defense was suffocating as the Falcons failed to enter the ball resulting in a five second violation.

SUNY Canton ran a double screen lofting the inbounds pass from the baseline over the defense to an open Felt who released the potential game-winning trey at the buzzer that just clanged off the iron resulting in the 65-63 final.

Annorh led all scorers with 26 points shooting 6-for-13 from the field and 10-for-12 from the line. Fletcher just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. He shot 5-for-7 from the field to go with four blocks and three steals. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) posted 10 points hitting four of his eight field goals.

Fisher got a balanced scoring effort as Ernest McNeil and Shular both scored 12 points and Chris Green and Haywood tallied 11 apiece.

The men's basketball team returns to the hardwood Wednesday when it hosts Johnson State College at 7:00 p.m. in the Roos House.
