Freshmen Knights on swim team highlight Day One of UNYSCSA

Ithaca, NY – Freshmen Nick Short (Endwell, NY) and Sam Zagrobelny (East Aurora, NY) qualified in their first-ever UNYSCSA meet to help provide the Clarkson University Swim team with points on the opening day of the annual regional meet.

After nine events, the Golden Knights’ men were tied for 11th among 14 teams with 38 points, while the women were 14th of 15 teams with 28 points.

Short placed 20th in the 200 individual medley in the preliminaries to qualify, but slipped to 24th in the scoring section of the meet with a time of 2:02.55. Matching that performance was Zagrobelny in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.06, falling one space from his preliminary time in the event.

The day opened with the women’s 500 freestyle where four competitors performed well in the preliminaries. Sophomore Kelly Mulvehill (Penfield, NY) had the top time among the Knights by finishing the race in 5:33.79 for 36th. Senior Colleen Daly (Manlius, NY), classmate Courtney Karszes (Stanley, NY), and junior Katrina Smith (Ballston Spa, NY) came in 43rd, 51st, and 55th, respectively.

In the other two women’s individual events, senior Kimberlee Stillittano (Binghamton, NY) placed 36th in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.74, while classmate Jillian Brown (Kenmore, NY) took the top spot among Clarkson competitors in the 50 freestyle, taking 32nd in 25.86. Sophomore Kelly Ludeke (Burnt Hills, NY), sophomore Deonna Coleman (Derby, NY) and junior Abby Luber (Camillus, NY) were 49th, 61st, and 64th, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.

For the men, senior Sean Parnett (Clifton Park, NY) just missed qualifying for the finals in the 500 freestyle by coming in 28th with a time of 4:59.09 and sophomore Ray Bailey (Galway, NY) wasn’t far behind, finishing two spots behind Parnett in 5:00.57. Freshman Sam Zwierzchowski (East Amherst, NY) and junior Paul Kreppel (Clarence, NY) both ranked in the top 36 spots and sophomore Nick Hens (Liverpool, NY) and Travis Derr (Lakeville, CT) finished among the top 45 in the preliminaries.

Besides Short’s placement in the 200 individual medley, freshman Jon Ketcham (East Aurora, NY) placed 32nd in 2:03.08 and Tyler Nichols (Spencerport, NY) was 35th. Chris Plummer (Spencerport, NY) also came in 40th and Aaron Parysek (Spencerport, NY) took 50th. Joining Zagrobelny in the 50 freestyle were senior Paul Telesca (Liverpool, NY) just missed qualifying by placing 26th in 22.23 seconds. Sophomore Alex Trass (Greene, NY) was 39th, Bailey was 41st, and Steve Cevaer (Ransomville, NY) took 48th.

Three teams also earned Clarkson points in the 200 medley relay. Luber, Mulvehill, Brown, and Ludeke had the 13th spot in 2:02.69 for the women, while the men had a pair of teams gain points in the relay race, gaining a 10th-place showing and a 24th-place finish.
