Bennington, VT – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team opened up play on Saturday afternoon in the Southern Vermont College Tournament with a 4-1 win over the Mountaineers. Four different players scored in the Roos win, while Freshman forward Hector Martinez (Bakersfield, CA) led the team with a goal and an assist.
Martinez opened up scoring for the Roos eleven minutes into the contest. Southern Vermont's Jimmy Thach tied it back up six minutes later, but it was all Roos the rest of the way. Senior defensive midfielder Erdous Lebron (San Juan, PR) scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from Mamadou Dansoko (Guinea) just before halftime.
Omar Qadiri (Fairport, NY) and Kyle Smith (Evans Mills,NY) added the insurance for SUNY Canton with goals in the second half. Qadiri's came in the 51st minute, and Smith's came on a pass from Martinez in the 68th minute. Senior keeper Austin Lamay (Malone, NY) turned aside four shots for the win in net.
Besides the goal margin, the Roos outshot the Mountaineers 20-8 and held great possession throughout the match.
They will play again tomorrow at 2:30p in the championship game of the Southern Vermont College Tournament versus the winner of the Oswego/University of Maine-Farmington matchup later today.
