POTSDAM, N.Y.—Fredonia State (11-2, 5-0 SUNYAC) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team (4-8, 1-4) in the second half for a 19-10 victory on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore defender Katie Kleine had a game-high seven points (2g, 5a) to lead the Blue Devils. Senior attack Maribeth Simmons scored three goals to become just the fifth Bear to reach 100 points (78g, 22a) in her career on Senior Day.
The first half saw a back and fourth battle with neither team able to pull away. With Potsdam trailing 2-1, senior captain Aubrey Macintosh scored on consecutive free positions to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage at the 12:24 mark. Fredonia junior attack Cortney Ciaschi tied the game 52 seconds later, but freshman attack Margaret Wall put Potsdam back in front at 9:43. Senior attack Amy Simon knotted the score at 9:16, but senior attack Sierra Langkammerer gave Potsdam its last lead at 7:29. After two Fredonia goals by junior defender Erin Edson and Klein, Langkammerer tied the game at 6-6 with 4:22 on the clock. Senior Attack Karli Brinthaupt struck for the next two tallies, but Simmons got Potsdam back to within 8-7 by the break.
Brinthaupt opened the scoring in the second half, but Simmons struck again to close the gap to 9-8. Potsdam was unable to get any closer as the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run over the next 14 minutes. Wall interrupted the run with a goal at 10:58 to make it a 15-9 contest. Fredonia scored the next three, but senior attack Carly Richards stopped the run with the 147th goal of her career at 4:43. The Blue Devils tacked on a final marker two minutes later to close the scoring at 19-10.
In goal, senior captain Kaci Milligan made 11 saves for Potsdam, while Fredonia junior goalie Casey Chiesa stopped 12 shots for the win.
The Blue Devils outshot the Bears 33-30 and had a 23-13 advantage in ground balls.
Potsdam begins a three-game road trip with a 4 p.m. contest at Cortland on Tuesday, April 17.
