FREDONIA, N.Y.—Kristie Kleine completed her hat trick in 105th minute as SUNY Fredonia's (4-10-1, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (8-6-1, 1-5-1) 3-2 in double overtime. Freshman forward Amber Hyatt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and sophomore midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) each scored for the Bears.
Offense was the story in the first half as the teams combined for 28 shots and 13 saves. However, the game remained scoreless until the 37th minute. Hyatt opened the scoring at 35:03 with assist from freshman midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley). The advantage lasted just over three minutes as Kleine tied the score with an assist from Michelle Hale. The score remained even at the half.
Kleine struck again at 55:49, slipping through and finishing a pass from Alexis Moreland. The Bears continued to battle evenly with the Blue Devils and created several chances in the last 15 minutes of the period. In the 83rd minute, Falsion scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to tie score at 2-2. Each team had one final chance in regulation, but couldn't gain the advantage.
Potsdam held the edge in play in the first overtime, taking two shots while not allowing a Fredonia chance. In the second extra session, Kleine connected with Moreland again at 104:39 end the game.
Senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) was strong again in goal, finishing with nine saves for Potsdam. Kendall Owczarzak stopped eight shots to earn the win.
Each team totaled 23 shots and the Blue Devils edged the Bears 5-4 in corners.
Potsdam wraps up conference play when the Bears host Brockport and Geneseo next Friday and Saturday.
