Fredonia downs Potsdam women's basketball, 68-40

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-8, 0-3 SUNYAC) fell to Fredonia State (6-3, 2-2 SUNYAC), 68-40, Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Katy Briedis led the Bears with 13 points and five rebounds.

Fredonia took the early lead six seconds into the first half with a good jumper by junior guard Becky Hebert. Both teams battled back-and-forth, exchanging the lead eight times. The Blue Devils generated some momentum at the 3:07 mark when senior guard Grace Moore converted a layup to spark an 8-0 run. A layup by freshman forward Sabrina Macaulay with 13 seconds remaining gave Fredonia a 34-19 lead at halftime.

The Blue Devils road the momentum in the second half as Potsdam's offense continued to struggle. Fredonia opened up the final half of the game on an 11-0 run with 16:15 remaining. The Bears ended their field goal drought at the 15:22 mark when Briedis drove to the basket for a good layup. The Blue Devils were able to maintain their comfortable lead for the rest of the second half with a final 8-0 run to seal the 68-40 victory.

The Bears struggled from the floor, shooting 24% and grabbing 33 rebounds to Fredonia's 54. Junior forward Jessica Kouzan totaled nine points.

Fredonia shot 42% from the floor and 63% from the free throw line. Junior forward Jaimie Warren led the Blue Devils with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hebert tallied 14 points and seven boards. Senior forward Anna Riley contributed a double-double performance with 12 points and 10 boards. Junior guard Nikole Lindquist added 10 points.

The Bears resume the regular season after the Holiday break on Jan. 4 versus North Country rival St. Lawrence University.
