Carter Franz went five for five with three runs scored and two driven in to back Jason Conde's six solid innings of pitching in game one of a 14-4 win over Vassar, but the Brewers bounced back with a 6-5 win in 10 innings in game two to gain a split of the opening weekend of Liberty League play in Poughkeepsie on Friday.
The Saints, 7-3, 1-1 and Brewers 2-6, 1-1 will play a second doubleheader on Saturday to complete the opening weekend of league play.
The Saints broke game one open with five runs in the top of the fourth and added four in the top of the fifth en route their 14-4 win. SLU pounded out 18 hits in the win with Khifter O'Connor adding two h its, Paul Piatelli three and Brian Magoveny two with four runs driven in to Franz's five for five performance. Piattelli had two doubles and a triple among his three hits.
Conde went six innings, striking out six, and Ben Jenkins pitched an inning of scoreless relief in game one.
In the nightcap, Vassar scored three in the bottom of the first off starter Matt Skelly, but he settled down and the Saints took a 4-3 lead with two in the top of the fifth. Vassar came back to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning and the Saints tied it again on the top of the eighth. Vassar scored the winning run against stopper Kyle Donaldson with an unearned run in the bottom of the tenth.
Franz went two for three, Jeff Kott had three hits in four at bats and Piattelli drove in two runs in game two. Skelly struck out five in eight innings in the starting role for the Saints.
